Riverina Sport Fishing Report
9th June 2009

May was nothing short of a brilliant month for fishing. Admittedly there were a couple of days where fish were hard to come by, but looking back through the results, the quality of fish was excellent. Cod over 70cm, goldens over 50cm and throw in trout cod over 10lb and you get the picture of why I like to fish in the cooler months.

The water temperature sat between 10 and 12 degrees for much of May which got the big fish interested and also had a few small ones nipping at the lures which filled in the periods between better fish. Unfortunately as I write this, the rain is falling, and snow is predicted down to 600m. This isn’t ideal conditions for cod fishing, but if you look around there are always options.

One shining light at this time of year is Lake Mulwala. The Lake is being drawn down as it was last season and again the fish are biting well. Large fish are being taken regularly and now is the time to fish this lake. Even though much is said about fishing Mulwala and how easy the fish are to catch, you still need to know how to fish it to achieve success. With the water level dropping rapidly most boat ramps are impossible to launch from requiring a bit of local know how to get on the water.

Winter is also big cod time on the lower Murray. The cold weather heralds the start of fishing for these river giants, but its not easy fishing and it can take days to get a shot at landing one of these great fish. Fishing for big cod is akin to marlin fishing. A lot of time and effort goes into achieving a fish of a lifetime.

Winter fishing can be very rewarding and with the right weather a crisp, sunny morning is a fantastic backdrop to fish our inland waterways.
