Riverina Sport Fishing Report
31st March 2009
The fishing at the moment can only be explained as ‘going off’. My last four days on the water have produced over twenty fish each day and whilst there haven’t been any monsters amongst them, catching that many fish of any species is a great days fishing.
Spinnerbaits are by far the best method to target these hungry cod. It’s not super important what colour it is, as long as you’re comfortable with having to cast it about 500 times for the day, than that’s the lure that will work for you.
Spinnerbaiting is an art form and it takes thousands of casts before you gain enough skill and ‘feel’ with the lure to be able to quickly and effectively fish a snag. Accurate casting is vital. If you can cast centimeter perfect you have fewer wasted casts and over a day you will fish more logs and hopefully catch more fish. The longer your lure spends close to where the fish are the more likely a fish is to attack it.
Many fishermen carry enough lures to sink the boat, but realistically only ever use a handful. These favourites (and we all have them) make you feel comfortable when they’re tied on, and you’ll fish better as a result. On tough days, don’t keep looking through the tackle box for the ‘magic’ lure, as it’s often not there. If the fish are shut down, it’s tough to get them to eat anything. Unless you want to try something new (and we all need to be constantly expanding our fishing horizon’s), just keep your old favourite in the strike zone and maintain concentration until the fish decides its time to bite. Experiment more when the fish are biting freely as you can assess the effectiveness of that lure against your standard armoury.
You won’t get better weather and better fishing than what the Riverina is offering at the moment. There’s plenty of water for fishing and it’s very, very clear. The water temperature is still sitting at twenty degrees which is keeping the smaller fish active and as the mercury dips into the mid teens, the big fish will get easier to catch.
A couple of days on the river at Hay? A night trip to Blowering, Mulwala perhaps? Why not, this is the time of year to fish.
