                                          Riverina Sport Fishing Report

11th May 2009

Now we are talking! If you not fishing at the moment, you’re really missing out on the peak time of year. It’s cold in the mornings, but the days are warm, still and brilliant for fishing.

May is my favourite month to fish the Murrumbidgee. The water level is very low, but this reduces the number of boats on the water. The low water also reduces the number of places where fish can live, allowing easy identification of where the fish are.

The water temperature is low at 10-12 degrees but this is serving to spark the hunger of the larger cod. In the past couple of weeks, cod over 70cm have been figuring in the catches and I lost a monster fish well over a metre beside the boat as I was ready to net it. This activity will continue for the next month until we really descend into the depths of winter toward the end of June, when a handful of bites per day become the norm.

I have just returned from a four day trip to the lower Murray River where we chased big cod. Whilst we landed cod to 78cm and goldens periodically through the day, we didn’t get our massive fish, but in that water the anticipation is very high as the next fish that eats your lure is likely to be in excess of a metre. The lower Murray is a fantastic location for an extended fishing trip and if you want to get a fish over a metre, now is the time to book. The big cod are active right through winter.

Further downstream from Wagga toward Hay, the cod are firing with cricket score catches of small fish for the bait fisherman and excellent size and frequency for the lure fanatics.

Don’t pack the fishing gear away just yet, it’s only just beginning….
